Data Mining

This project was a semester project for the Data Mining class, the objective of the project was to find indicators or patterns on incoming students using Data Mining techniques by looking at historic admissions data at WVU. It used Weka, open source data mining software: Project link We even presented a poster in M2007, a data mining conference by SAS, on the same topic; it won a prize (5 out of 32 entries) of fully-paid conference trip. Here is a report on that: Enrollment Prediction Models Using Data Mining

I did a brief study on auto insurance data, which has a compound Poisson distribution on the Payment variable. It is a challenging problem, as the most of the records has a zero or a very low payments and some of them have very high payments. I tried M5P, a model tree learner, neural networks, GLM, IBk, an instance based learner with nearest neighbor,  and bagging. I found that GLM with a Poisson distribution and logit link function performed the best. Here is a report on that study: Studying auto insurance data

I had a question on my candidacy exam that asked me to create a data mining system “for the manufacturing facility that would enable the plant personnel to identify the key aspects that would affect quality, production
throughput, energy, inventory levels, and Overall Equipment Effectiveness.” Although this was a fictional project, it gave me a solid background on manufacturing facilities use analytics in their process. Here is my answer to that question: Data mining for Manufacturing Facility

Neural Networks

In my master’s thesis, I developed some of the existing confidence intervals models (non-linear regression, bootstrapping, and maximum-likelihood) for neural networks. VDM Verlag publishing has printed a book on this thesis.

Swish

This is a project I worked during summer for Dr. R. C. Chandran, the objective of the project was to develop growth videos of different weeds in a wild field. This product is known as Biology and Life cycle Of Weeds. It was fully created in Swish 2.0.

MATLAB

I once tried to predict what would be the next score of Sachin Tendulkar in a test match, I never tested it, please feel free to use it, here.

Improvement Curve Cost Model and Revenue Cost Model (pdf)

[DDET BibTex Entry (+)]
@article{1469899020030601,
Abstract = {This article focuses on improvement curve cost model and revenue cost model. Ship dismantling in the U.S. is quite different from in developing countries, and ship deconstruction costs are much higher in the U.S. The ship deconstructors in developing countries earn significant profits because of lower recycling costs of the ships and higher resale values of the scrap. Previous cost models developed estimated the cost of ship deconstruction, but the improvement effects from learning were not included. The data on the ship deconstruction cost were sparse, and the improvement curve or learning curve theory was applied to the available data to develop an improvement curve cost model for ship deconstruction. The application of improvement curve theory to ship deconstruction requires modification, as the ships are not the same size even though they may be in the same class. },
